follow the story on latest features avon sr6 manual (17mb .pdf) youtube video - maiden voyage bow locker build page. console build page seat unit build page. selva 90 outboard repair & starter motor repair new trailer tug avon searider 5.4 metre rib avon have manufactured searider rib's (rigid hull inflatable boats) in 4m, 4.7m, 5.4m, 6m, 6.4m, 7.4m & 8.4m lengths for many years. the quality and sea worthiness of these amazing rib's has been recognised throughout the world. the majority of models seeing service in the armed forces as well as commercial and rescue duties. this personal web site is my online "scrapbook" recording the renovation of my own ex-military 5.4m avon searider. i have been interested in boats and diving ever since watching the jacques cousteau television series back in the early 70's. it took me a while but i eventually qualified as an saa 'advanced nitrox instructor' and iantd 'advanced recreational trimix instructor'. i have also completed the rya powerboat 2 course at anglesey divers which i would thoroughly recommend to all who take the helm of a sports boat. so over the years i have helmed and dived off many different ribs, but seariders have always been a firm favourite of mine. they are well designed and solidly built (especially the ones commisioned for the military) which means they can take an awlful lot of punishment, more so than some of the 'modern' equivalents i have been in. the deep v of the hull cuts through the water giving a smoother ride than a similar rib with a flatter profile. one of the main differences is the unique flooding hull design of the searider which means that the rib sinks down slightly in the water at rest providing a stable platform to work or dive off. no rocking from side to side like some deep v ribs, the seariders settle onto the large bouyancy tubes either side. once on the plane though the water in the hull soon empties from the large hole at the bottom of the transom. simple but effective! line drawing of a military 5.4m searider as seen on http://www.avon-workboats.com the "project" before after avon searider 5.4m 'ex-military' as purchased starting to look like a rib how it looks today with an evinrude e-tec 90 the whole package (minus force 75hp outboard) was bought as a "scrapper" from a friend, money changed hands mainly because it sat on a brand new galvanised trailer he had fabricated especially for the rib. considering the quality and value of the trailer the rib was effectively free. later the 'new' trailer was swopped out with one from another friend that could be converted back to a braked trailer. this was some 5 years ago however i already had another rib project on the go at the time so just brought this one home and parked it up. none of the pods (inflatable tubes/sponsons) would stay inflated for more than a few minutes. there are 5 seperate sections on a 5.4m avon searider the idea being that if one or two deflate while in service the remaining ones will be more than sufficient to keep it safetly afloat. not so on this wreck, each section had multiple patches of varying quality, the baffles inside the tubes which seperate the sections had burst and all the valves leaked anyway. the heavy duty hypalon avon fabric is made up of several layers and in places this one was worn down to the reinforcing fibres and worse! fortunately the transom seemed solid but the hull was missing a fair amount of gel coat where it had been repeatedly battered up rocky beaches and concrete slipways. there were a few signs of bodged hull repairs covered over with some sort of paint and the deck had been painted at sometime with green gloss..... and then overpainted with red floor paint or similar. fortunately i think the layers of paint had actually preserved the integrity of the deck, however some of the numerous glassfibre repairs were falling off. the centre console was also loose on its mountings and split in places, the steering completely siezed! i started pulling things off the rib and thought that if i removed the tubes from the hull i would be able to carefully open them up on the seams and use them as patterns to make some new ones. so armed with a hot air gun and a few tools i completely stripped the avon of its tubes and fittings it only took a couple of hours, then nothing for about 2 or 3 years ........ ....... until along came a brand new set of avon ex-military tubes and fittings at a bargain price! unfortunately there was no fitting kit supplied with the tubes and the hull was now looking pretty bad and required too much work. so it sat in the garden rotting away for another couple of years until the summer of 2010 when "i" ( read " the wife") decided it was time to either do something with it or scrap it! that\'s one of the all time greats. erik 17-04-2016 amazing boats. the manuals and information have been very useful to me as i\'ve been fixing up an old 5,4sr here in tromso, norway. learning about the automatic ballast system was important since i had problems figuring out what that big open hole in the transom was. boat/console was originally orange - but changed color to light gray. also fitted a 120 hp evinrude v4 without ant problems - very stable and runs nice in the water. also 100 liter tank fitted in behind the console - so in sum 270 kg .. again - thanks for all tips, info and manuals you provided - and happy sr\'ing :-) ronny nord 20-07-2016 hello, can you tip me were i can find tubes for my avon 540? regards ronny nord larry conklin 20-07-2016 wow what a wealth of information. thank you so much! i have a fundamental question about the feasibility of replacing the water ballast with fi
